Volendam.org is an independent visitor guide to Volendam, Netherlands. It is not affiliated with VVV Volendam, the municipality of Edam-Volendam or Holland America Line. This policy explains what personal data is processed when you visit volendam.org, who processes it and what choices you have. It applies to every language version of the site.
1. Who Is Responsible
The controller for this website is the publisher of Volendam.org. For any privacy question or request, email [email protected]. We aim to reply within 30 days.
2. What We Collect and Why
| Purpose | Service | Data | Legal basis (GDPR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delivering the website and keeping it secure | Cloudflare (hosting and CDN) | IP address, browser type, requested page, time. Kept in short-lived server and security logs | Legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f)) |
| Visitor statistics | Google Analytics 4 | Pages viewed, time on page, approximate location (country/city), device and browser, referring site. Uses cookies such as _ga | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) |
| Advertising | Google AdSense | Cookies and similar identifiers, IP address, pages viewed. Used to show, measure and personalise ads and to prevent fraud | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) |
| Video | YouTube (privacy-enhanced mode, youtube-nocookie.com) | Data is only sent to YouTube when you press play | Consent, given when you start the video |
| Answering your email | Your email address and message | Legitimate interest / steps at your request |
We don't run user accounts, newsletters or comment sections. The business-listing form on the Services page isn't connected to any server, so nothing you type there reaches us. To be listed, email us.
3. Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4, provided by Google Ireland Limited, to understand which pages are useful and how people find the site. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store full IP addresses. We see only aggregated reports (for example "how many people read the Marken ferry page"), never individual identities. Analytics data is kept for no longer than 14 months.
You can opt out with Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser.
4. Google AdSense and Advertising Cookies
This site is funded by ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites. Google's advertising cookies let Google and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings.
- You can opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info and, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
- Read how Google uses information from sites that use its services: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
If you opt out of personalised ads you will still see ads, but they will be based on general factors such as the page you are reading rather than your browsing history.
5. Affiliate Links
Some pages link to booking partners such as GetYourGuide (tours and tickets) and Expedia (hotels). If you click one of these links and make a booking, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. When you follow such a link, the partner's site may set its own cookies to record the referral, and its own privacy policy applies from then on. We receive commission reports only, never your personal or payment details.
6. Cookies and How to Control Them
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. On this site they come from Google (Analytics and AdSense), and from YouTube or affiliate partners when you interact with them. We set no cookies of our own.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Instructions are available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge. Blocking cookies does not stop the guide from working.
7. International Transfers
Google, Cloudflare and some affiliate partners may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. These transfers rely on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider is certified, or on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
8. Your Rights
If you are in the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland, you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted
- restrict or object to processing, including processing based on legitimate interest
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that took place before
- data portability
- lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In the Netherlands this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens
Because we don't identify individual visitors, data held by Google is best managed directly through your Google account and the tools linked above. For anything else, email [email protected].
California residents: we do not sell personal information for money. Personalised advertising may count as "sharing" under the CCPA/CPRA. You can opt out through Google Ads Settings or the opt-out tools above.
9. Children
This guide is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
10. Changes to This Policy
We update this policy when the services we use change. The "Last updated" date at the top always shows the current version.
